What if I told you that the biggest challenge that is keeping you STUCK -- is something that is actually within your power to harness and control, if only you were taught how it works? What if I can prove to you that a set of unseen processes that have been running beneath your awareness have hijacked your conscious will and caused your current outer reality?

This mysterious concept has been taught from a worldly, scientific view, but rarely from a Christian perspective, with spiritual understanding and Bible Scriptures to back it up. Therefore, in this blog article, I am going to lay down the foundation of how this mental process works in simple terms, so that you can understand it, relate to it and have practical comprehension on how to control it. This insight is incredibly valuable and you will be enlightened and empowered!

This deep and supernatural topic we will discuss will shock you, once you understand it from a Godly perspective. God has given us a mechanism for change & transformation and I have rarely heard any Christian minister teach on it! Therefore, we're diving into one of the most powerful, yet often ignored, topics for a believer: The Subconscious Mind."

For many, the idea of the subconscious sounds like new-age mysticism, or too scientific, but it's a profound, scientific reality. It’s the “hidden engine” of your soul. And the truth is, this inner world is a critical piece of the spiritual journey. When the Bible tells us in Romans 12:2 to be 'transformed by the renewing of your mind,' that isn't just about reading the Scriptures; it's about rewriting the operating system of your life.

We are going to list 7 key scientific facts about the subconscious mind that, when viewed through a spiritual Christian lens, will completely revolutionize the way you approach thinking, speaking and outright living. You’ll see that science simply affirms the wisdom of God's Word, but wisdom from Holy Spirit is needed to explain it with spiritual understanding. Let's dig into the facts, and then we'll expound on each through a spiritual, Christian lens.

Understanding the Conscious & Subconscious Mind (Spiritually + Scientifically)

First off, let’s define some of the basics. We know God is Spirit (John 4:24). Therefore, we also are spirits because we came from GOD. It is written in Acts 17:28 that “…in Him we live and move and have our being…we are His offspring”. I personally believe we are spirit beings; we have a soul and we live in a body. It is my theory that God gave us each a soul to be able to experience the physical world through our physical bodies.

According to science, the soul is said to be made up of the mind, emotions and will. To further zoom into our current topic, the mind has two main parts: the conscious and the subconscious mind. With this we can already see how God does things in layers, levels and dimensions! Amazing.

Now, it is estimated that the conscious mind makes up about 5% of your mind as a whole and that your life is controlled by about 5% of it. On the other hand, the subconscious mind is said to make up 95% of your mind and also governs 95% of your life. Isn’t that crazy? Many relate this to the illustration of an iceberg and how only a tiny bit of it is visible and above water, while the rest is hidden and massively larger. This is symbolic of the conscious mind (visible iceberg above water) and the subconscious (massive, unseen iceberg below the water).

7 Scientific Facts About the Subconscious Mind (Revealed Through Scripture)

1. The Subconscious Mind Runs Your Life on Autopilot

Your subconscious mind manages about 95% of your entire life. This includes your habits, automatic behaviors, emotions, and physical functions. And this allows the conscious mind to focus on critical thinking. Man, this intricacy is so amazing! And it shows that God is the One who created it and He created us this way as it is written, "For You formed my inward parts." Now let's zoom into habit formation for a second. So what are habits?

Habits are simply neurological loops that are stored in your subconscious mind. Once a habit is formed, it requires very little conscious effort for you to execute. It's very important to realize that whatever is ingrained in our subconscious mind becomes our default setting. This default setting is the place that we view, live, and experience our world from.

2. Your Subconscious Stores Every Experience You’ve Ever Had

It records and stores every experience you’ve ever had, even those you've consciously forgotten, influencing your current beliefs and reactions. Well, we are made after God’s image and likeness right? (“Then God said, ‘Let Us make mankind in Our image, in Our likeness…” [Genesis 1:26 NKJV] “…and HE [God] knows everything.” [1 John 3:20 NKJV])

3. The Subconscious Cannot Tell the Difference Between Real and Imagined

The subconscious mind has no logic filter. It cannot distinguish between reality and imagination. It accepts as truth whatever the conscious mind feeds it, whether through repeated thought, visualization, or external suggestion.

Here, the science tells us of the power of imagination, thus why meditation & repeated thought is so powerful! It is scientifically proven. We can also see why the Lord would command His people in Joshua 1:8 to rehearse His Laws verbally and “to meditate day and night…”. God knew the power of repetition and that reciting His Truth and Ways would ensure it would go deep into our hearts.

  • Note: sometimes when the Bible says “the heart”, it refers to the very core of our being and can also refer to our soul, of which the mind is a part of. In essence, God wanted His Law & Ways to get into our subconscious mind, so that His Truth would be our “default setting”. So profound! This is what we just discussed in Fact #1.

  • Deep Revelation on Subconscious Visualization: Visualizing an event can activate the same neural pathways in the brain as actually performing the event, which is why athletes use mental rehearsal to improve physical performance. We can also see that this does affect the neurological senses of our nervous system (our 5 senses, as well as perception, balance, pain, etc.) How? Well, for example, have you ever had a friend describe to you how they stubbed their toe and as you listen, you suddenly cringe as if it had just happened to you? Listening & imagining the event caused you to literally experience that event in your nervous system because your subconscious mind perceived it as reality in the moment you visualized what your friend was describing! Your subconscious mind thought it was really happening and it created the emotions (emotions = energy-in-motion). Those emotions sent out the vibrational frequencies of “pain” and it rippled outward until your body “felt it” neurologically. This likely made you cringe! I personally believe that what we call feelings is simply the body’s perception and awareness of the emotions coming from deep within. These emotions were produced from our thoughts.

Since God is The Creator and He created us in His image & likeness, we are also “creators” (lower-case “c”). This is even true for those who are not Christians. In summary, our thoughts create emotions which then ripple-out from our subconscious mind as vibrational frequencies and are then felt through the body’s nervous system, being perceived as feelings. And what you “feel”, whether true or not, right or wrong, is “real” to you. It is your perceived reality. Now this is a good thing when you are thinking good things (see Philippians 4:8). And this can be devastating when you are thinking negative things. Your thoughts create “your” reality. The good news is that if you understand how the subconscious works, you can harness what God has created and use it for your benefit!

Isn’t that just so mind-blowing!? (consider writing a quick comment at the end of this blog post & I will reply)

4. The Subconscious Is Wide-Open in Childhood (Ages 0–7)

Here’s the Critical Factor: Between the ages of 0 and 7, the brain operates primarily in Theta brainwaves, making the subconscious highly permeable/suggestible. During this time, the "critical factor" (the logical filter of the conscious mind) is undeveloped. During this development stage, without the conscious mind as a filter, a child will believe anything they’re told and that leads to the formation of their core beliefs. The spiritual basis for this reads as, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6 NKJV). Absolutely amazing!

5. The Subconscious Seeks Safety Above All

Its “protection mechanism” & primary function is survival. This includes, physical, instinctive, emotional and behavioral survival. It will always default to what is familiar and safe, even if the "safe" pattern is unhealthy and not actually safe. The subconscious is also like an automatic “cruise control” for daily life. Once again, if we put our trust in God and make Him our comfort because He is (see 2 Corinthians 1:3-4), our subconscious’ “default setting” will be Peace and Rest. And we know this is His Will because Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace…” (John 16:33 NKJV). Jesus also said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28 NKJV).

6. The Subconscious Speaks ONLY the Language of Repetition

The only language the subconscious understands for change is repetition. New positive affirmations or thoughts must be repeated consistently to create new, permanent neural pathways in the brain. This is a vital thing to remember. We are able to “re-program” our subconscious through repetition, but ideally, when our subconscious mind is most susceptible and “open” for re-programming (more on that in a moment...) If you want to change your life, it must be done in the mind and you must learn to think about what you think about! We must become aware of our thought-life. The Bible strongly emphasizes on how we are to think and so make sure you remember these 4 essential scriptures that will affirm what we’ve learned.

  • “And do not be conformed to this world (any longer with its superficial values and customs), but be transformed and progressively changed (as you mature spiritually) by the renewing of your mind (focusing on Godly values and ethical attitudes).” (Romans 12:2 AMP)

  • “Set your mind and keep focused habitually on the things above (the Heavenly things), not on things that are on the earth (which have only temporal value).” (Colossians 3:2 AMP)

  • “Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart].” (Philippians 4:8 AMP). Your “heart” here could definitely mean our soul, where our subconscious mind is located.

  • “You will keep in perfect and constant peace the one whose mind is steadfast [that is, committed and focused on You—in both inclination and character], Because he trusts and takes refuge in You [with hope and confident expectation].” (Isaiah 26:3 AMP)

7. Adults Can Reprogram Their Subconscious Through Understanding Brainwave States

Techniques like deep meditation and prayer can shift the brain from the conscious, analytical Beta state to the subconscious, receptive Alpha and Theta states, which is ideal for "re-programming." This connects to Fact #4 in that as adults, we can help ourselves get into that theta state as when we were children, to re-write our inner operating system. There are two natural times in every person’s day that our brain goes into a theta level brainwave state:

  1. just when you’re waking up

  2. just as you fall asleep.

The theta brainwave state occurs in the in-between awake & asleep state that we’ve all experienced. This is when our subconscious mind can be accessed, and it’s “operating system” entered into for re-programming. The other way to enter into this brainwave state is through meditation, but there is only one safe way to practice meditation. In fact, the Lord has been teaching me about the mechanics of Christian meditation since January 2024 and I wrote a 30-page in-depth teaching of what He taught me, in my premium E-book. It’s rare you’ll find such a book where it is Holy Spirit-inspired and where the science is explained also. If you’re interested, you can get more info here. Science Doesn’t Contradict the Bible — It Illuminates It

So, you see, the scientific understanding of the subconscious doesn't contradict Scripture; it illuminates it in our modern language. When we talk about the power of the subconscious mind, we're really talking about the amazing design God placed within us. By intentionally renewing our mind, we align our inner engine with His Divine Will, moving from simply knowing about the truth to living from the Truth! More importantly, we can program our subconscious mind to a positive and Godly default mode, so it works in our favor!

Now, the journey of transformation begins with an intentional act. I want to challenge you today to make that commitment.

Here’s what I want you to do right now:

Commit to the Change: Look at your life and identify one area where a limiting belief is holding you back. Maybe it's a feeling of unworthiness, or doubt about your God-given purpose? Write down the opposite truth—the Scriptural truth—in the comments below. For example, if you struggle with feeling unworthy, type a Godly affirmation such as: 'I am worthy because I am a child of God' or you can write a direct Scripture like: “I am worthy because I have been accepted in the Beloved” (Ephesians 1:6 NKJV). Let's fill this comment section with renewed minds and encourage one another too!

Make sure you join my FREE newsletter (see bottom of page), so you can stay updated on new content that will bless you. Remember, you have been blessed with all spiritual blessings (Eph 1:3), therefore it is your reality that “You Are So Blessed!”
