Can you imagine waking up one morning and realizing that money as you know it has completely changed? What if banks aren’t the way they used to be and are no longer the only way to send or store your money? People across the world are trading, buying, and investing in a new kind of digital currency that exists entirely online, on something called a blockchain—and some of them are building wealth because of it. Can you imagine?!

Well, this isn’t science fiction. This is cryptocurrency. And while it may seem new, overwhelming, or even appear “too complicated,” the truth is this: crypto is not going away. In fact, it’s only growing stronger and more rapidly by the day. The earlier you understand it, the more prepared you’ll be for the financial future and this tremendous economic shift that is happening as we speak.

If you’ve ever thought, “I should probably learn about crypto, but it feels way too complicated,” then this guide is for you.

What Exactly is Cryptocurrency? (Simple Explanation)

In essence, cryptocurrency is just digital money. Instead of being printed like dollars or coins, it exists solely online and is powered by something called blockchain technology—a secure digital ledger that records every transaction.

Here’s why people are paying attention:

  • Speed: Transactions can happen in seconds, anywhere in the world.

  • Low Cost: Fees are many times much lower than banks or wire transfers.

  • Ownership: You control your money directly— there is no middlemen involved (depends on type of wallet you use).

  • Potential Growth: Many see crypto as both a currency and an investment.

You can simply think of it this way: what email was to letters you would send in the mail; cryptocurrency is to money. At first, it seemed strange, but now it’s part of daily life. Crypto will soon be this way!

Why Learn About Cryptocurrency Now?

You’ve probably heard of Bitcoin or maybe Ethereum—two of the biggest names in crypto. In case you haven’t, Bitcoin is the most well-known cryptocurrency, often called “digital gold,” while Ethereum powers decentralized apps and smart contracts.

But here’s the thing: we’re still in the early stages. As of 2025, only about 20% of the adult U.S population has invested in crypto and only about 10% of the global population! So, if you haven’t started, you’re still early. Just like the internet in the 1990s, people who learned early had an advantage. Back then, it was confusing and even scary for many, but today? You can’t imagine life without it.

The same thing is happening with cryptocurrency right now. While some are hesitant, others are learning, adapting, and positioning themselves ahead of the curve. It is important to spot trends and at least learn what it is all about, rather than pretending things aren’t changing.

If you wait until “everyone” is using it, you’ll be very late to the party!

How to Buy Crypto Safely as a Beginner

If you want to simply dip your toes into crypto, here are a few beginner steps to take:

1.      Choose a Reputable Cryptocurrency Exchange
You will want to start with a trusted platform like Kraken, Uphold, or Crypto.com. These are the same exchanges I have safely used and they will allow you buy crypto with your local currency (such as USD).

2.      Buy a Small Amount First

3.      Get a Wallet

  • Exchange Wallet (Custodial) - online Crypto exchanges

  • Hot Wallet (Non-Custodial) - also online

  • Cold Wallet (Hardware) - offline; I purchased two types. One from Ledger and the other from Tangem.

4.      Stay Safe

  • Never share your private (digital) keys.

  • Double-check wallet addresses before sending.

  • Watch out for scams—if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Don’t worry if the above seems a bit foreign. There’s a lot of new terminology, but the above steps give you a taste of how crypto works. Still, we’re just scratching the surface.

Why Most Beginners Quit (And How You Won’t)

Here’s the harsh truth: many beginners give up on crypto because they try to learn everything at once. They jump into complicated platforms, get lost in the jargon, and walk away thinking, “Crypto isn’t for me. The secret is this: you only need to understand a few key concepts to get started confidently.
